  I came here three years ago for support and to make friends

  this site is such a great and valuable resource and simon is to be commended for running it for so long.

  when i first came i was in such a bad state and really needed support and friendship.

  so many posters commented on my threads and showed genuine care some are real life friends, some are facebook friends, some i talk to on the phone and some are forum friends.. i have just realised though that everyone online is not your friend.

  I read every post on this thread and have nothing to add (because I couldn't). I've been here ten years and have learned so much, most importantly that we are so small and insignificant but can be kind and give the benefit of the doubt. Not saying we don't matter; we all do.

  I deal with confusion and frustration and all the rest by writing prose poetry. By now, it's certainly clear to me that not everyone relates. Or maybe they do but have no response. This one got no attention when posted a few weeks ago, but maybe you'll relate to it. I wish you peace and love.

  I have locked myself away, away from friends and all distraction, those that impinge upon my goal.

  My goal? To make contact with that undefined force that wells up from within but has no tangible existence, no palpable aspect to it. Nonetheless, I know it is there. It niggles at me during all my anxious waking hours; it skewers me without mercy during ever fitful sleep.

  Why do I bother when life could be so much simpler when I turn off the brain and numb my heart to love and life's other beautiful sensations? I am driven to discover what learning and romance and religion have failed to afford me. I must find what lies hidden within my troubled frame and pull it up and out into the sun of day.

  I have vowed to search at all cost to myself, in the life now and whatever life may come . . .

  i have recently viewed the lady in the van, which was filmed principally in north london.

  i am currently reviewing a transcript of alan bennett's play of the same title, looking for the exact quotation (the above may not be verbatim).. also, in the movie's subtitles, the word "curb" is spelled "kerb" in the original transcript.

  Thank you, dear friends, across the pond for your great replies.

  This has turned out better than I had imagined it would! I'm an editor for writers in the U.S.A., and these examples are helpful to me. I need to be able to distinguish between ours and yours, although yours is preferable in so many ways:

  if the watchtower society can publish magazines in dozens of different languages----then why not in English English ?all that americanese .must really put many UK readers right off ( if there are any UK readers.....)

  Thank you, George, for your response! Much appreciated.

  In USA, curb means edge of pavement, too, but is also a verb, as in to "curb" one's spending. Of course, you know that.

  We never use "kerb" here. The ref to Diehard was that the German got his word order about "cats and dogs" reversed. Never heard about "stair rods" before!

  Yes, as to what JWs would NOT say at your door!

  I have recently viewed The Lady in the Van, which was filmed principally in North London. I am currently reviewing a transcript of Alan Bennett's play of the same title, looking for the exact quotation (the above may not be verbatim).

  Also, in the movie's subtitles, the word "curb" is spelled "kerb" in the original transcript.

  Any comments about subtle and obvious differences between American and British speech and writing would be appreciated. Incidentally, in the film, Diehard, a German thug gave away his true identity to Bruce Willis' character by saying it was "raining dogs and cats" and by referring to the elevator as the "lift."

  the issue of whether beards are acceptable or not is addressed in the september 2016 watchtower - well sort of.

  it is as clear as mud as to whether they are allowed in places like australia, usa and britain.. 17. what are some factors that may affect whether a brother wears a beard?17 what about the propriety of brothers wearing a beard?

  My conscience says I hate to shave and I like to be called Jesus. I do draw the line at Christ, however.

  Amazing how long hair and beards are so common here where I live -- men of all ages.

  I appreciate your response and the assurance that my little fact-based tales do resonate with someone. Whatever you have suffered personally, I do regret and offer my condolences. Since I have let others down, causing pain, I can be understanding and forgiving when I have been the recipient of unbearable hurt.

  Yes, life goes on and we recover -- sort of! I, too, am in a good place now, although certainly not a perfect place.

  BTW: I have "Sleepless" and have watched it many times. Some movies strike a responsive chord and can be viewed over and over.
